Why some Magna salons charge more (or less)
Pricing in Salt Lake County varies $15–$25 between salons for the same service. The difference usually comes down to three things:
- Sterilization protocol — autoclave vs. wipe-down. Autoclaving is more expensive and we do it.
- Disposable liners — single-use plastic liners in pedicure chairs add cost per service. We use them every time.
- Tech experience — a senior tech with 10+ years runs faster, leaves cleaner cuticle work, and the manicure lasts longer.
A $20 manicure is usually one of those three corners cut. A $60 manicure at a downtown SLC studio usually has the same service we do at $35 — you're paying for the address, not the work.
What the price covers
A standard manicure here is 45–60 minutes. That includes a five-minute soak, individual cuticle attention on each nail, shaping to your preference (almond, square, oval — ask), a hand and forearm massage, and the polish or gel application. It is not a rushed 20-minute service.
If you've been to a place where the manicure took 25 minutes total, that's why theirs costs $18 and ours costs $25.
When to expect upcharges
We tell you in advance, but for transparency:
- Length over your natural nail is +$5–$15 depending on system
- Removal of an old set done elsewhere (gel/dip/acrylic) is +$10
- Repair of broken nails (rebuilding with product) is +$3 per nail
- French tip on traditional polish is +$5
No surprises at checkout.
Tipping
The honest number: 18–22% is standard. On a $45 dipping powder set, that's $8–$10. Cash tips go directly to the tech; card tips do too at our salon, but it's worth asking at any salon since some still pool tips.
We don't put pressure on guests to tip a specific amount — the tip line on the receipt is yours. But the question comes up enough that we wanted to put a number on it.
